The California Matts Are Looking For a Good Free Agent
This off-season, the California Matts are looking to sign the right free agent to a long term deal. We’re looking for a 5-tool caliber player. Someone who can start everyday and who brings a good aura into the clubhouse. The Matts would like someone who is consistent at the plate, who has the potential to handle a bat well, who can hit for power, uses speed when necessary, and does well with the leather. Most of all, we want a player who is excited to be part of the team and has a desire to play in California. We are not looking for a utility player, however the type of free agent we are looking to sign will be comfortable playing in multiple positions on the field.
The Matts are not looking to sign any aging veterans of the game, nor are we interested in taking a chance on a young, unproven rookie fresh from the minors. We are interested in players that are confident and intelligent, who know how the game is played, and who are in or just entering their prime.
The Matts recognize that we are not in a position financially to offer the kind of lucrative contract that a player of this caliber deserves. We recognize that in this market there are probably better offers elsewhere. Nevertheless, we are prepared to offer a long term, back-loaded contract of many years, complete with incentives and bonuses. Signing with the Matts is an investment. While at this particular moment we realize we don’t have the financial means to purchase a new stadium, or develop our farm system, the player that signs with us will see the great potential we have to offer. Most of all, the Matts treat their players right, with dignity and respect. Should we find a suitable player of this caliber among the free agent market, that player will have the full benefits that come with signing with the Matts. They will be loved like never before, and will be elevated to the status of a star-like franchise player. Indeed, a franchise player is exactly what we’re hoping to sign. We are looking for someone to build around. The player that is given this contract will have the security of knowing they will always and forever be part of this team.
In addition to this, we want someone who feels a type of loyalty and commitment to the franchise. We desire someone who wants to stay with the organization for the remainder of their career. Someone who wants to help with building a good farm system and further player development. Someone who wants to mentor the youth in the organization. We want someone who realizes that the game itself is far more important than the fame and fortune that can be derived from it.
Finally, the type of free agent that will be offered this contract, will be the type of player who is as good off the field as she is on. This player will have a desire to better the community here in California, who will be a positive influence and will be comfortable in speaking with the media. We will not sign anyone who comes with any baggage or off-field issues. We want someone who abides by the league rules and regulations, and who can be a good example in the clubhouse, as well as in the community. The California Matts are quite certain of the type of player that we are looking for.
Because we can only afford to make this signing once, we simply cannot settle. We have set the bar high, in the hopes that we can find this elusive player and fill the empty spot on our roster indefinitely. We want a player who wants to win. A player who is anxious to be part of a real dynasty for years to come. We feel she will be the missing piece that will allow us to reach our championship.
